Get Involved in SHAC

The SHAC develops a wellness plan to implement the District’s nutrition guidelines and wellness goals. The wellness plan will, at a minimum, address:

  1. strategies for soliciting involvement by and input from persons interested in the wellness plan and policy;
  2. objectives, benchmarks, and activities for implementing the wellness goals;
  3. methods for measuring implementation of the wellness goals;
  4. the District’s standards for foods and beverages provided, but not sold, to students during the school day on a school campus; and
  5. the manner of communicating to the public applicable information about the District’s wellness policy and plan.

The SHAC will review and revise the plan on a regular basis and recommend revisions to the wellness policy when necessary.

Smart Snacks on School Campuses

In compliance with state and federal requirements, the Jim Ned CISD wellness policy and plan support the Smart Snack guidelines observed by our campuses.

The list below addresses a few of the most commonly asked questions about Smart Snacks:

  • All non-cafeteria foods that students pay for on campus during the school day must meet Smart Snack standards. The school day is midnight until 30 minutes after the school day ends.
  • All non-cafeteria outlets on campus that are selling Smart Snacks must be closed during the scheduled times for breakfast and lunch.
  • Concession stands at events held during the school day (basketball tournaments, track meets, academic UIL meet, etc.) may only sell Smart Snacks until the school day ends. Once 30 minutes has elapsed past the end of the school day, concession stands can resume selling other foods.
  • The district can designate six days within the school year to sell foods that don't meet Smart Snack standards.
  • 'Stores' run by a PTO on campus during the school day, at the campus administrator's discretion, may only sell Smart Snacks, unless (1) the items they are selling are intended to be consumed outside of the school day, or (2) the store is open on one of the six designated days.
  • Smart Snack guidelines do not apply to foods brought in by parents for student celebrations.
